Managing Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is an age related eye disease that results in damage to the macula. At the back of the eye, light sensitive tissue called the retina, picks up the light that comes through the pupil, and “captures the image” like a camera's film. The part of the retina which processes the fine details of our sharp central vision is called the macula. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) occurs when this area of the eye becomes damaged, and it can result in devastating vision loss.

Unfortunately, at this time, there is real cure for macular degeneration. Treatment options aim to reduce the extent of vision impairment that AMD causes. Early detection is essential, it is imperative to have a yearly comprehensive eye exam at our office in Oklahoma City if you are at risk – for example being over the age of 60, or having a family history of macular degeneration or blindness. If signs of AMD are detected, we recommend having an open discussion with your optometrist in Oklahoma City about the risks and limitations of any macular degeneration treatment plan.

Types of Macular Degeneration and Treatment Options:

Wet Macular Degeneration Treatment

Wet macular degeneration is considered the more serious type. Extra blood vessels are produced (angiogenesis) and they can leak at the back of the eye, causing more severe and quicker progressing vision loss. The treatment options that exist for the wet form of AMD are more aggressive. They include:

  • Antiangiogenic medication injected into the eyes
  • Light activated dyes injected into the blood stream
  • Laser surgery

Dry Macular Degeneration Treatment

Dry macular degeneration tends to advance more gradually, and dry AMD therapy is generally preventative in nature. Your eye doctor may recommend a blend of anti-oxidants and zinc in high doses, which appear to be able to reduce the progression of macular degeneration.

With any type of macular deterioration treatment, there are no guarantees of success. Treatments may need to be repeated. And there is a sobering realization that eyesight which has deteriorated due to macular degeneration is rarely recovered.
